Biography

Shannon Staples is a highly sought after Vitality Coach. She is known for helping clients actualize their full vital potential and live a happier, healthier, more fulfilling life with healthy habits to last for the long term.

My Story

Ah, what a ride it's been! 

I developed an interest in personal growth and a yearning to understand the meaning of life at the age of 15. I started down that path with a very healthy dose of curiosity and an open mind. The road has been long and varied, taking in many different theories and practices for a happy, fulfilling, healthy life.

I became interested in psychology in my mid 20's after going through some personal challenges (mainly divorce - mine, my parents' and my brother's all in the same year) and went on to earn a certificate in counseling. While I gained a lot from seeing a counselor, I discovered that as a profession, I prefer supporting people by focusing on the future and collaborating with them to find solutions and possibilities for creating the life they desire, which led me to life coaching and holistic wellness. 

I’ve always had a deepShannon Collage interest in how our minds work, and a natural capacity to understand people. My interest in our inner worlds stems from my own personal journey. I experienced many years of self-doubt, a persistent inner critic, and an everpresent feeling of never being good enough. 

Then, when I became a Mother, I began to struggle with crippling overwhelm and mild anxiety. I thought I might have had post-partum. Finding it difficult to be needed all the time, I wished I could withdraw, cocoon myself and recharge.

It wasn't post-partum. I have a trait that is known as Sensory Processing Sensitivity, which is a finely tuned nervous system. People with this trait represent 15-20% of the population and are more commonly referred to as Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP). But I didn't learn about this for several more years.

Eight months after becoming a mother, my Dad committed suicide. He was a career firefighter who suffered with PTSD and clinical depression for many years. For the following year, I was pretty much a zombie mommy, just going through the motions during the day and crying myself to sleep every night, until I finally sought help from a Psychologist who used Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT, or Tapping) to help me recover from the trauma very quickly. 

By then my son was 2 and my step-son was 13. The next few years were not as rosy as I would have liked, as it was HSP hell living with a teen and a toddler in the house. I was in extreme sensory and emotional overload. All. The. Time.

I hit rock bottom in 2011, on about day 3 of a trip to Mexico with my extended family. To say I was a mess would be a massive understatement. I spent all night alone on the bathroom floor crying and scheming about how to justify flying home by myself and leaving everyone else there to relax in paradise. Honestly, NOTHING sounded more appealing than being completely alone for ten days at home in the middle of winter! But I didn't do it. No one even knew how messed up I was. In desperation, I turned back to energy healing - EFT and other tools I learned - to cope as best I could with the day-to-day.

Later that year, a friend told me to read "The Highly Sensitve Child" by Elaine Aron, because he suspected my son was Highly Sensitive. Sure enough he was, and while learning about my son, I did the test on myself and got 26/27 for HSP!  **Insert Harps And Angels Singing!**  It was such a feeling of validation and understanding! I was not a freak, a terrible person, or insane! This was a turning point in my adult life, as I saw myself and other HSPs in my family (including my Dad) in a new light.

I began a period of learning and growth to manage my high sensitivity and to help my son too. Energy work was a tool I frequently relied on, but I was also drawn to coaching for helping achieve goals, overcome blocks, and change behaviours, among other things. So, I studied to become a certified life coach in 2012-13. 

During those years, I was on a physical healing journey too. When we couldn't concieve another child, we discovered I had Polycystic Ovary Syndrom (PCOS) and insulin resistance. I spent a great deal of time learning and experimenting with my diet and other natural approaches to wellness. I learned how to minimize my symptoms, maintain a healthy weight, and how many wellness practices were helpful in managing my energy levels and HSP overwhelm too.

My experiences inspired my desire to make a difference in people's lives through vitality coaching and energy work. Over the years I have continued my education with certificates in Health & Wellness Coaching, Nutrition, and Energy Healing.  

I'm honoured to be able to support people (especially HSPs) through their own holistic wellness journey -- to live their highest potential with peace, ease and vitality -- by developing a wellness mindset, tapping into their inner wisdom, raising their energetic vibration, managing their emotions, improving self-care, and boosting their overall health.

Fun facts about me:

  • An accomplishment I'm very proud of is riding a tandem bicycle 7200km across Canada with a friend, fully self-supported, to teach kids about environmental sustainability.
  • My first car was a '77 Ford Maverick. It was a gas guzzling beast that was affectionately named "The Green Machine."  My current car is a Ford Focus Electric - zero gas!
  • I am Introverted, Highly Sensitive (HSP), and a Myers-Briggs INFP. Meaning, I am generally optimistic, creative, intuitive and sensitive to people's emotional lives. I tend to be reserved until I get to know people, but once I do, I love delving into topics of deep meaning and feeling. I am inspired most by work that aligns with my values and allows me to help others. I believe there's always room for improvement in myself and I strive to leave this world a better place than I found it.
  • My top 5 qualities: loyal, nurturing, understanding, open-minded, love learning.
  • I always have 4 or 5 different books on the go: A mix of personal growth, professional development, business, and one really good novel to get lost in.
